Roadway and Intersection Design
The Kittelson LLC team has a variety of experience around roadway and intersection design, including national research, guidebook and manual development, construction plans and specifications, peer reviews, and cost estimating. This experience includes:
- Research documents that contributed to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets
- Guidelines for bicycle facilities throughout the United States, including direct work on several Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) research effort and guideline documents
- All editions of the Roundabouts Informational Guide
- Design manuals for state departments of transportation
This experience helps our clients better understand the transportation-related elements of their cases.
In addition, the Kittelson LLC team has considerable experience in the preparation of plans and specifications for highway and roadway construction, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, lighting, roundabouts, and traffic signal systems. Our staff are knowledgeable about the history of design over the last 100 years and routinely assess whether a given facility design conforms with the applicable standard of care and state-of-the-practice at the time it was created. Our team has experience with roadside design issues, including application of clear zones and appropriate installation of roadside barriers and attenuation devices.
